About Scratch

Scratch Southern Cakes’ founder and owner, Elana Burton, grew up in Alabama and Mississippi, a true Southern Girl (cue Maze ft. Frankie Beverly)! Elana’s Aunt Joan (Tee-Tee) was a cafeteria manager at a local high school in her hometown of Tuscaloosa, AL and had a special talent for cooking and baking. Elana remembers her Tee-Tee’s house always being filled with the wonderful aromas of butter, vanilla, and caramel. Elana saw dozens of candies and cakes being created before her eyes and lined up on the kitchen table for various members of the church and community. Elana always admired her Tee-Tee’s baking talent and started researching recipes to try to create her own cakes. Elana’s mother is also a great cook and gave Elana the freedom to experiment with different cake and dessert recipes when she was young. Over the years, Elana gathered old recipes from old recipe books and from her elders and began to make them her own. Elana is fascinated by mixing the right ingredients together to make a delectable treat that reflects her Southern culture and heritage.

Scratch Southern Cakes is a labor of love that has come together slowly over the years. Elana first came up with the idea of starting a baking business back in 2009 when she lived in Brooklyn, New York. Although Elana has always had a talent for baking, she hesitated to start her own business, but secretly desired to one day own her own bakery. Elana loves to entertain and always bakes a fresh pound cake when she has visitors as an expression of love and affection. Elana’s friends and family have recognized her love and talent for baking and encouraged her to share her good pound cakes and layer cakes with others!
